Rescue Efforts - Shadows

Let's go back to when
We knew who we were
And life to me was nothing but a dream
But after you
I guess it was more like a nightmare
If I didn't know better I'd say I did this to myself
But it wouldn't be this way with
Anybody else
If I could just pick myself up off of this concrete
I'd take another leap of faith into the sea
And hopefully this time I'd stay afloat
Long enough to catch my breath
Instead of drowning in the thought of death
I don't know where to go without a map
And you took the last one with you when you left
And now I'm just retracing all the steps I did before
That lead me back to sitting on the floor
With a bottle in my hands
And I can barely stand
Cause my knees are far too weak
And I can barely speak
With these anchors in my chest
I'll try to do my best
But I'm overcome with stress
While you finally get to rest
Shadows of the friends I knew before
But the sun won't warm their skin anymore
You come face to face with this darkness and you don't know what to do with it
It looms over you and you just always know it's there
You try to shake the feeling but it drags you down deeper and deeper into that darkness
You become overwhelmed with this pain
An ache
A longing for something you can never have again
And trying to cope with that fact is one of the most painful things you'll have to do in life
Because letting go isn't about forgetting, it's about accepting reality in all it's forms
It's about appreciating what you had, and using that to appreciate what you have
But it feels like being torn apart from the inside, I know
And all the optimism you've tried to harvest in your life is getting used up
And you feel like you've got nothing left
You have to push on
Learn to love the pain and accept it as life because that's really all it is
Pain is just life reminding you that you're alive
And that you're going to die
Just like everyone else
So you can't get stuck in those dark places
Because that's not where beautiful things are supposed to hide
And you are beautiful
Life is beautiful
Even with all of it's ugly parts
You can't forget that one tragic moment doesn't define a lifetime
No matter how dramatic and depressing that moment might be
And I know, when it rains it pours
And sometimes it seems like the pain will never stop
But it will
As long as you use it
Don't ignore it
Build from it
Don't let it destroy you
Because we exist on this planet to create
You can't build anything on something that isn't there anymore
So you can't spend all the time you have left
Trying to find a way to bring something back
Things change
Friendships end
Relationships end
Everything ends
But if you're sad enough to be bothered by that
It means you're alive enough to think about it
So try to think about something else
Think about yourself
Think about what you want
What you need
And try to reach those goals because you're the only one who will
