Stavros Hughes - Backwards

Down the road and ‘round the way
I saw a man, just yesterday
Cast his savings to the flame
And pray for coming rain
The next day, still I saw the man
But now he had a different plan
Buried his body ‘neath the sand
And begged me for a spade
He rasped and wheezed, pulled out a smoke
“Spare a sick man a light,” he croaked
“I haven’t got a light to give”
“The longer I will live!”
I sat him down, gave him a drink
How did this oxymoron think?
He wouldn’t speak or move his lips
With cigarette unlit
All that is lost
Is not theirs to take
Glass figures painted white
Inward grasps to break
Down the road and ‘round the way
I saw a man, one rainy day
Throw his umbrella in the bay
And curse the falling rain
I rushed outside without a coat
A cigarette burning my throat
I watched the man, and taking note
I promptly did the same
All that is lost
Is not theirs to take
Glass figures painted white
Inward grasps to break
