Barry Lawton - the stars we're in position

Sat shyly holding hands
The universe gazed down and smiled
She'd spent hours on her hair
He looked resplendent in his reebok whites
No amount of acne or nerves
Could make him feel any less than a king
When he slipped his arms around her
The little girl bloomed into a queen

The stars were in position
Hormones being fired from up above
No one understands except that boy and girl
Caught up in young love

They talked of everything and nothing
Waiting for her bus home to arrive
Every time his jokes hit home
She threw back her hair with a twinkle in her eye
They kissed before the bus left
She let him warm his hands inside her coat
They promised more in signals and signs
Of what was to come when they were next alone

Too young to go to pubs
Too old to stay with parents indoors
They could brave the cold night air
Or risk it on the squeaks of her bedroom floor
With his jeans around his ankles
Skirt crumpled round her waist
Young love lost its innocence
And real life got its first taste
