Jay Carlin - Me Instead

I was friends with this girl back when I was in high school
She was so down to earth, easy going, and so damn beautiful
But she dated this guy who I thought was a loser
He just tried to use her
And I was always just another shoulder to cry on
When everything went wrong

When he'd leave her over nothing
She'd ask me what should she do
I'd say he's not good enough for you
But she didn't want the truth

So I told her what she wanted to hear
That her boyfriend wasn't gonna disappear
So I told her that he'd change his mind
It was just another fight and it's gonna take time
So I told her everything was okay
Sure enough he was back by the end of the day
Shoulda told her what was really in my head
I wish you'd choose Me Instead
I wish you'd choose Me Instead

I tried telling myself we were better as just friends
She tried telling herself she was happy despite all evidence
So this cycle continued and she kept on crying
While he kept on lying
I felt like I was stuck right in the middle for so long
I had to bite my tongue

Then one day I finally asked her
Why can't she find someone new
She said no one else could love her too
But she didn't see the truth

So I told her what she wanted to hear
That her boyfriend wasn't gonna disappear
So I told her that he'd change his mind
It was just another fight and it's gonna take time
So I told her everything was okay
Sure enough he was back by the very next day
Shoulda told her what was really in my head
I wish you'd choose Me Instead
I wish you'd choose Me Instead

After we graduated we both went our own ways
Heard she married that same guy and started a new life
But a couple years later I picked up a phone call
She was crying and she asked if I could talk
She told me that he was leaving her
He had met somebody new
She said she had only one regret
A long pause and then she took a breath
And then whispering she softly said
I wish you'd chose Me Instead
I wish you'd chose Me Instead
I wish you'd chose Me Instead
I wish you'd chose Me Instead
I wish you'd chose Me Instead
