The circus is in town the people gather to the tent
They all sit and cheer as they enjoy the main event
But soon the show will pause to prepare for the next set
And then I'll give them something that they won't ever forget
I step out from the side and I take the center stage
I show them fancy tricks and tame the lion in its cage
The crowd gets on their feet as they begin to cheer and scream
But as soon as it started it is gone just like a dream
The main event is ready for act two
Myself and everyone knows I am through
'Cause I'm not what they came here to see

I'm just the sideshow

There's just no time for the sideshow

The show keeps marching on I make the best with what I got
I guess I understand why I'm not the center slot
But is it wrong to wish to be the act they're waiting for
Instead I'm pushed aside as something easy to ignore
They love to see my act just for a while
They recognize my face it makes them smile
But once they realize the main event has made it back
They're suddenly reminded of the things they feel I lack
The show is over now the people start to leave the tent
Everyone's still talking all about the main event
I hear my act get mentioned a few times in passing thought
But soon I'll be remembered as the one that they forgot
Now the tent is empty and it's time for me to go
And as I step outside I see a figure that I know
He takes me in his arms and tells me son I loved your show
You entertained the masses but now it is time to go
Because you know your circus days are through
And I have got much bigger plans for you
'Cause you are all I came here to see
