Make Like Monkeys - The Ballad of Jacob Marley

Jacob Marley was a friend of mine
He lived in London in that soot and grime
Constantly keeping money on his mind
And in time he built that chain

A chain that stretches over forty feet
Each link in life he made with dirty deeds
Like turning his back to other peoples needs
Now he finds he drags that chain

He came to me one fateful Christmas Eve
With a tale of warning that I had to heed
Or I would surely be bent to my knees
And I'd cry 'cause I'd have my own chain

But I was born again that Christmas day
Have not seen Jacob since he went away
I pray to God that I could find a way
To repay him......and I'd take his chain
